The war memorial is on Cheapside, at the crossroads of routes to Barnoldby-le-Beck, Brigsley, Holton-le-Clay and Waltham village, so is visible to all who pass by. The white Portland Stone of its construction, which has recently been cleaned, makes it difficult to miss. It has stood in this position since the 11th November 1920, when it was unveiled and dedicated in memory of the men of Waltham who died in the 1st World War. After the Second World War other names were added, but the original construction still looks good, and is clearly tended by the local parish council.

The main cross is of Runic Design, about, some 5400mm high, although we were unable to measure it; the height comes from a report in the “Grimsby News” of 12th November, 1919, which stated it was some 18 feet high. On the upper arms of the cross are the words Faith, Hope & Glory, surmounted by a crown of glory, whilst on the stem in relief is the figure of the risen  Christ looking over a soldiers grave.

The die bears an inscription:- 
1914-1918
FOR GOD for KING for COUNTRY
TO THE GLORIOUS MEMORY OF THE MEN OF WALTHAM WHO DIED AND IN RECOGNITION OF THE SELF-SACRIFICE OF ALL WHO FOUGHT IN THE GREAT WAR
THIS MONUMENT IS DEDICATED 
 The cross and die stand on a set of two steps made from hard Bradford Stone, and the whole memorial is set on a rough pavement of flagstones. The main square base stones are made from Portland Stone. 

The memorial was designed by John J. Ariba Cresswell, sculpted by A. Sherwood Edwards, whilst Messrs T. Frith & Sons placed the base in position and E. Gilbertson 
(Masons) dressed the stones and placed them into position. The memorial was unveiled by Lieut. Colonel J.H. Hinton after a service of dedication took place in the church, led by the Rev. W. Horn. 

An inscription on one side of the memorial gives an insight into who paid for it.

The names of the Fallen for the First World War are one side of the memorial whilst those for the Second World War are on the opposite side. These are displayed below:

On November 11th and 12th 1920, the Grimsby Telegraph wrote two articles on the unveiling ceremony and a Mr. Topham had a photograph shown. The first article describes the monument in detail and the second article the opening ceremony itself.
The First article reads as follows:-
 
“WALTHAM TODAY CELEBRATED THE SECOND ANNIVERSARY OF ARMISTICE DAY BY THE UNVEILING OF ITS WAR MEMORIAL. 
THE MONUMENT STANDS IN A CONSPICUOUS POSITION AT THE CROSS ROADS AT THE WEST END OF WALTHAM VILLAGE. IT IS OF PORTLAND STONE, AND 18 FEET HIGH. THREE STEPS LEAD UP TO THE BASE, ON WHICH IS THE INSCRIPTION. 
1914 - 1918 
FOR GOD - FOR KING - FOR COUNTRY 
TO THE GLORIOUS MEMORY OF THE MEN OF WALTHAM WHO DIED 
AND IN RECOGNITION OF THE SELF-SACRIFICE OF ALL WHO FOUGHT IN

ON TOP OF THIS BASE AND ABOVE TWO FURTHER STEPS STANDS A MODIFIED RUNIC CROSS, ON THE THREE UPPER ARMS ARE INSCRIBED FAITH, HOPE AND GLORY, SURMOUNTED BY A CROWN OF VICTORY. ON THE STEM IS A FIGURE OF CHRIST LOOKING DOWN IN PITY ON A SOLDIERS GRAVE. 
SURROUNDING THE MONUMENT IS A ROUGH STONE PAVEMENT, BACKED BY A HOLLY HEDGE. 
THE MONUMENT HAS BEEN EXECUTED BY MR J. J. CRESSWELL, A. R. I. B. A. 
ARCHITECT, MR A. S. EDWARDS, SCULPTURE, AND MR J. FRITH, STONE MASON ALL OF GRIMSBY”

THE MONUMENT ERECTED IN WALTHAM TO PERPETUATE THE MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THE VILLAGE WHO MADE THE SUPREME SACRIFICE DURING THE WAR WAS UNVEILED YESTERDAY AFTERNOON BY LIEUTENANT COLONEL J. H. HINTON, H.F.A., IN THE PRESENCE OF A LARGE GATHERING OF VILLAGERS AND A CONTINGENT OF LOCAL EX-SERVICE MEN. 
THE CEREMONY WAS PRECEDED BY A UNITED MEMORIAL SERVICE AT THE PARISH CHURCH, WHICH WAS ATTENDED BY MEMBERS OF THE WALTHAM NON- CONFORMIST CHURCHES AS WELL AS MEMBERS OF THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND. 
EVERY SEAT IN THE PICTURESQUE LITTLE CHURCH WAS OCCUPIED. THE SERVICE, WHICH WAS OF AN IMPRESSIVE NATURE, WAS CONDUCTED BY THE RECTOR, (REV. W. HORN, M. A.) AND THE LESSONS WERE READ BY THE REV. G. A. F. GOSTICK, (MINISTER AT THE WESLEYAN CHURCH) AND THE REV. F. S. BUTTON (PRIMITIVE METHODIST MINISTER). THE HYMNS SUNG WERE "SOLDIERS WHO ARE CHRIST'S BELOW" AND" TEN THOUSAND TIMES TEN THOUSAND," AND AT THE CLOSE THE CHOIR AND CONGREGATION JOINED IN SINGING THE NATIONAL ANTHEM. 
AFTER THE SERVICE THE EX-SERVICE MEN, WHO WERE UNDER THE COMMAND OF MAJOR FULLER, AND CONGREGATION, WALKED THROUGH THE VILLAGE TO THE CROSS-ROADS TO THE MONUMENT-- A DESCRIPTION OF WHICH APPEARED IN YESTERDAYS "TELEGRAPH" 
FOLLOWING A DEVOTIONAL OPENING, MR. W. V. DOUGHTY, J.P., THE CHAIRMAN OF THE WAR MEMORIAL COMMITTEE CALLED UPON LIEUT.,- COLONEL HINTON TO UNVEIL THE MONUMENT. HE SAID THE COMMITTEE HAD A GREAT DESIRE TO DO JUSTICE TO THE RECORD OF WALTHAM OF WHICH THE VILLAGE MIGHT WELL BE PROUD, AND THEY HAD ENDEAVOURED TO RAISE A MEMORIAL WHICH IT WAS HOPED WOULD PERPETUATE FOR ALL TIME THE MEMORY OF THE MEN WHO HAD GIVEN THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY. 
IN THE COURSE OF A SHORT ADDRESS PRIOR TO UNVEILING THE CROSS, LIEUT.,- COL. HINTON REFERRED TO THE FACT THAT DURING THE WAR PEOPLE HAD OFTEN TALKED OF GREAT MEN. BUT IT WAS NOT THE GREAT STATESMEN, OR THE GREAT GENERAL WHO HAD WON THE WAR, IT WAS THE SIMPLE SAILOR, THE GUNNER BEHIND HIS GUN AND THE PRIVATE CARRYING HIS PACK. 
THE PEOPLE OF WALTHAM SHOULD BE PROUD OF THE MEN FROM THE VILLAGE WHO HAD COME FORWARD WHEN THE CALL WENT FORTH. THOSE MEN CAME FORWARD NOBLY AND SIMPLY; 
THEY WENT OUT TO FRANCE AND DID THEIR DUTY WITH THE SAME NOBLENESS AND SIMPLICITY; AND THEY DIED NOBLY AND SIMPLY. THE MONUMENT THAT HAD BEEN ERECTED WOULD EVER REMIND THEM OF THOSE MEN--- AND WOULD REMIND FUTURE GENERATIONS OF THE MEN OF WALTHAM WHO HAD DIED FOR THEM. 
HE HOPED THAT AN ANNUAL CEREMONY WOULD TAKE PLACE AT THE MEMORIAL, AND HE THOUGHT THAT THE CHILDREN IN THE SCHOOLS SHOULD BE TAUGHT TO SALUTE THE MONUMENT WHENEVER THEY PASSED IT. 
LIEUT. - COL. HINTON IN CONCLUSION QUOTED THE FOLLOWING LINES WRITTEN BY RUDYARD KIPLING”: 
"OF TIMES COMETH OUR WISE LORD, MASTER OF EVERY TRADE”, 
"AND TELLS TALES OF HIS DAILY TOLL OF EDEN'S NEWLY MADE, 
"AND THEY RISE TO THEIR FEET AS HE PASSES BY, GENTLEMEN UNAFRAID." 
REMOVING THE UNION JACK, WHICH COVERED THE BASE OF THE MONUMENT, COL. HINTON REMARKED, "I UNVEIL THIS MONUMENT TO THE GENTLEMEN OF WALTHAM." 
MR. W. CORRINGHAM, AN EX-SOLDIER, THEN STEPPED FOREWORD AND SOUNDED THE "LAST POST" AND THE "REVEILLE" AND THE CEREMONY CLOSED WITH THE NATIONAL ANTHEM. 
SEVERAL BEAUTIFUL FLORAL TRIBUTES WERE LAID AT THE FOOT OF THE MONUMENT, INCLUDING A MAGNIFICENT WREATH OF LILIES AND CHRYSANTHEMUMS FROM THE EX-SERVICE MEN OF WALTHAM 'IN PROUD MEMORY OF FALLEN COMRADES."

It should be noted that the name W. Dobbs did not appear on the list provided by the Memorial Committee, and his name does not appear on the memorial. So did the newspaper get it wrong, make a mistake-we shall never know.

There is some dispute at present as to whether the memorial has been moved. Certainly in the 1960’s, there was a road widening scheme in the village on the corner of Cheapside and Brigsley Road, and some houses that were there in 1920 have been demolished. 

An early photograph of the memorial, which I illustrate below, seems to show it in a different position than it is at present. Apparently the buses from Grimsby used to make a turn at this point and the road was widened to enable them to do so. Quite recently, the junction has been altered again to put a mini-roundabout in the road.

This matter is still under investigation. Certainly the Parish Council did discuss moving the memorial onto the village green but this has been decided against. The same council have recently had the memorial cleaned using money provided by an unnamed organisation.
